"My lion is a love letter to Portsmouth," Or shares. "I wanted to give back to the community that has embraced me so warmly. I hope people will come and interact with my piece, not just observe it from a distance."
Celebrating Portsmouth's Literary Legacy
Another artist, November Tan, moved to Portsmouth to pursue her PhD and quickly fell in love with the city's rich history. November's lion sculpture pays homage to Portsmouth's libraries and literary places, inspired by the stories and memories shared by the city's residents.
"I wanted to celebrate the city's 100 years by creating a piece of artwork that captures its literary spirit," November explains. "The stories we collected from people about their favorite reading spots were truly special."
Connecting with Nature and Community
Amy Palmer, an artist connected to Portsmouth through her university experience, designed a lion inspired by the city's wildlife and species. Amy's passion for animals and nature shines through in her work, reflecting her belief in the importance of respecting and celebrating the natural world.
"Portsmouth has a vibrant community, and I'm proud to call it my city," Amy says. "There's always room for growth, but the music scene, the people, and the wildlife make it a special place."
A Trail of Discovery
The lion trail, which also includes a unicorn statue, offers a unique and engaging way to explore Portsmouth. It begins in Paulsgrove and winds its way through the city, ending in Southsea. Over nine weeks, from July 13th to September 13th, residents and visitors alike can embark on this artistic journey, discovering the hidden gems and stories that make Portsmouth so special.
